2023Collaboration Workshop

Toward effective engagement with HBCU's, MSI's, community colleges, and consortia through DOE WDTS programs

Welcome

Welcome to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory 2023 Collaboration Workshop Website!

Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL, the Lab) is the world’s premier research institution, empowering leaders and teams to pursue breakthroughs in an environment marked by operational excellence and engagement with the communities where we live and work. ORNL delivers scientific discoveries and technical breakthroughs needed to realize solutions in energy and national security and provide economic benefit to the nation.

The 2023 Collaboration Workshop

The Lab is committed to building long-term collaborations that increase the participation of underrepresented groups in the ORNL’s science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) workforce. To this end, we are leveraging the Department of Energy’s Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) programs, the GEM fellowship (managed by the National GEM Consortium) and other internal and external opportunities to prepare the next-generation STEM workforce, and to cultivate and sustain enduring relationships between ORNL scientists the participating institutions.

This Workshop aims to:

  1. Increase the participation of underrepresented groups in STEM by deepening engagements with 20 Minority Serving Institutions (MSI’s), Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s) and community colleges.
  2. Provide tools for success to increase the number of students from participating institutions at ORNL through the WDTS programs (including SULI, CCI, VFP, and SCGSR)
  3. Raise awareness among participants about the educational and employment opportunities available at ORNL and its user facilities
  4. Establish a network of relationships between students and faculty from participating institutions with ORNL researchers
